Summer is a great time to explore a college campus, take courses to get ahead and experience college life.  Motivated high school students interested in studying business can take advantage of the Business Scholars Summer program created for incoming freshmen or the Young Business Leaders Pre-College program designed especially for ninth through eleventh-grade students.

Business Scholars Summer Program for Incoming Freshmen

(July 2024)

Graduating high school seniors admitted to Prairie View A&M University can get started on their college coursework before classes begin in the fall.  The Business Scholars Summer Program is a five-week academic experience designed for incoming first-year students interested in taking courses toward their business degree plan.

Students will be enrolled in MGMT 1301 Introduction to Business and ENGL 1301 Freshman Composition* I. In addition to course offerings students will have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in virtual academic and professional enhancement workshops
  • Virtual network with faculty, staff, and administration
  • Virtual Service-Learning Projects
  • Receive Online mentoring and tutorial assistance

*For students who have completed the equivalent of ENGL 1301 Freshmen Composition I or ENGL 1302 Freshmen Composition II via dual credit or AP, another course will be selected for you to satisfy degree plan.

Program Costs

  • Prairie View A&M University will cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees for qualified applicants. Students are responsible for paying for deposits, textbooks and other related expenses.

Young Business Leaders Summer Program for High School Students (June 2024)

The Young Business Leaders (YBL) Summer Program is a week-long residential program is designed to introduce talented high school students to the field of business and career options. Students are challenged to solve problems using basic business principles taught in the program by PVAMU business faculty and through interaction with business students. Enriching presentations, experiential learning exercises and trips to local businesses inspire and motivate students to aspire to careers in marketing, accounting, entrepreneurship, management, finance and information systems.

When is the program?

YBL will return in June 10 – 14, 2024

Who is eligible to participate in the program?

Students (ages 14 – 18) who are currently in 9th, 10th and/or 11th grade as of January 2023, with a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible to apply. Admission is competitive and is based on the student’s academic record, and counselor recommendation and grade level.

What are the program costs?

Each student is required to pay a non-refundable fee of $500.00 upon acceptance in the program. Scholarships may be available to a limited number of participants.  Parents are responsible for the student’s transportation from home to the university and return. Students traveling to the Houston/Prairie View areas by commercial transportation will be met at the appropriate arrival facility by university personnel and will be provided transportation to the campus for a fee.

What does the fee cover?

Typically, the fee covers all program costs including materials, meals and housing.  Additional information is available in the application.

How do I apply and when is the deadline?

Students can apply by completing the student application form and the academic counselor recommendation form.  Please remember to attach academic information (current report card) or transcript, and mail all materials to the address indicated in the application.

A complete application package includes:

  1. YBL application and essay
  2. Academic information, this can be the most recent transcript or report card (may be sent separately from school).
  3. Counselor/Teacher Recommendation Form (may be sent separately from school)

Faxed copies will not be accepted. Incomplete packages will not be considered after the deadline date. For confidentiality purposes, counselor forms may be sent separately from the application. If a transcript is not available, academic information (report cards) are acceptable, please calculate GPA as of the date of the application.
