Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is committed to protecting the safety, health, and wellbeing of its employees, students, and all people who come into contact with its property and facilities.  Recognizing that drug and alcohol abuse poses a direct and substantial threat to this goal, PVAMU is committed to providing a drug-free working and learning environment for all of its employees and students.  To address these issues, PVAMU strives to:

  • Articulate and consistently enforce clear policies that promote an educational environment free from drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Provide ongoing education for members of the campus community for the purpose of preventing drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Provide a reasonable level of care for drug and alcohol abusers through counseling, treatment, and referral.
  • Implement campus activities that promote and reinforce health, responsible living, respect for community and campus standards, individual responsibility on the campus, and intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual, ethical, and physical well-being of the members.
  • Be vocal and visionary in combating the negative issues surrounding drug and alcohol use and abuse on campus.

As part of the commitment to the provision of high quality and effective service to our students, employees and the public, PVAMU has established a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program.  The program is accessible to all members of the campus community.  PVAMU is committed to the dissemination of drug and alcohol awareness information to students, faculty, and staff.

Operation of the Program

Prairie View A&M University is committed to the elimination of alcohol abuse and illicit drug use.  The use of such substances disrupts the university’s mission of excellence in teaching, research and service.  We all must help prevent alcohol abuse and illicit drug use from negatively affecting the learning environment.  The university expects its students and employees to cooperate in maintaining an environment free from the effects of alcohol and other drugs and to comply with laws and regulations related to the consumption, possession, sale and distribution of alcohol and other drugs.  As part of this program, PVAMU has initiated the following actions:

  • Each semester, students, faculty and staff are made aware of the PVAMU DAAPP program and related policies/procedures via electronic mail.
  • Additionally, new faculty and staff are provided DAAPP program information at New Employee Orientation.
  • In addition to the annual notification, written material including pamphlets and literature on drug and alcohol abuse is made available at the Offices of Student Counseling Services and Human Resources as well as online at the PVAMU DAAPP website.
  • Drug and alcohol abuse prevention materials are distributed to all new students attending orientation sessions.
  • At least once each academic year, the Office of Student Engagement provides risk management training for members and advisors of registered student organizations at PVAMU.  As part of the program, the Office of Student Engagement addresses topics such as:  possession and use of alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs, and penalties that may be imposed for the illegal possession or use.  Each advisor or student representative reports the program’s contents at a meeting of full membership of the student organization.
  • Prairie View A&M University has several Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) programs, services and outreach efforts in place to address alcohol and drug issues for students, faculty and staff. In addition, these programs are available at no charge.  The overall mission is to provide the campus population with counseling services, rehabilitation and substance abuse awareness and education.  Educational information is disseminated through workshops, training seminars, presentations to classes and student groups, information tables, and special educational promotions throughout the year.
  • PVAMU offers programs as alternatives to activities which may include alcohol or illicit drugs.  Additionally, PVAMU provides students the opportunity to participate in campus clubs and organizations.  These events and organizations promote a constructive lifestyle and encourage healthy behavior in an environment absent of drugs and alcohol.
  • All full-time employees are eligible to participate in the Wellness Program, which encourages PVAMU employees to engage in fitness activity.  This program promotes a healthy lifestyle, away from the pressures or risks of drugs and alcohol.
