ANNOUNCEMENT: The TEAS exam will replace the HESI A2 exam as the admissions assessment for the Prairie View A&M University – College of Nursing, starting with the Spring 2025 application deadline of September 1, 2024. In light of this change, Testing Services will begin administering the TEAS exam within our office in June 2024. Details about test dates and testing options will be provided in May 2024.

What is the ATI TEAS?

The ATI TEAS, or Test of Essential Academic Skills, is a standardized test designed specifically to assess a student’s preparedness for entering the health science fields. Questions are designed to test the basic academic skills you will need to perform successfully in the areas of Reading, Math, Science, and English and Language Usage

Why do PVAMU – College of Nursing applicants have to take the ATI TEAS?

The ATI TEAS has been statistically proven to be a valid predictor of early nursing school success. Your score on the TEAS is one measure of academic preparedness that helps Prairie View A&M University’s College of Nursing consider your acceptance into its nursing program.

What does the TEAS exam consist of?

The ATI TEAS test comprises 170 questions. Testers will have 209 minutes (3 hours and 29 minutes) to complete the exam.

ATI TEAS, version 7, the number of questions in each content section and individual exam time are as follows:

  • Reading – 45 questions (55 minutes)
  • Math – 38 questions (57 minutes)
  • Science – 50 questions (60 minutes)
  • English & Language Usage – 37 questions (37 minutes)

ATI TEAS – Minimum Passing Scores

    • For the ATI TEAS exam, only individual exam scores for each section will be considered for PVAMU – College of Nursing Program admissions, not the combined total exam score.
    • All Prairie View A&M University – College of Nursing applicants must score the following minimum passing scores on each section:
Test Section Passing Score
English & Language Usage 64%
Math 74%
Reading 75%
Science 55%

How should testers prepare for the TEAS exam?

ATI, the official exam prep provider, recommends allowing yourself at least six (6) weeks to prepare for the test (This is a recommendation from the testing agency. This is not a requirement of the PVAMU Nursing Program).

Various test preparation resources are available to help you study for the test – all aligned to the ATI TEAS, Version 7, and packed with thousands of practice questions based on the content and format of the actual exam.

Testing Options for the ATI TEAS exam will be made available on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 10 AM.

If you have any questions, please email the Testing Services office at aetesting@pvamu.edu.

  1. How does the allotted exam time work? The exam sections are timed individually.
  2. If I do not use all the exam time in a section, does the unused time roll over to the other test sections? When you finish a test section and do not use all the allotted exam time, you cannot return to it and the unused exam time will not be distributed to the other test sections.

Prairie View A&M University’s College of Nursing will only consider HESI A2 exam results if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • The exam was completed before March 1, 2024.
  • All individual scores for the required sections (Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Math, Anatomy & Physiology) meet the minimum passing requirements of 75% within two attempts (first-time and retest).
  • The individual scores for the required sections are not older than 2 years from the test date printed on the test results.

NOTE: If HESI A2 exam results do not meet all of the criteria outlined above, the tester is required to take all sections of the ATI TEAS exam. The tester can test as a first-time tester for the ATI TEAS exam, and they must meet the minimum passing scores for the individual sections of the ATI TEAS test within two attempts.
