The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), by the College Board, provides students with the opportunity to earn college credit by demonstrating college-level knowledge through standardized examinations. CLEP offers more than 30 exams across a variety of subject areas, allowing students to potentially save time and tuition costs while progressing toward their degree.

The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends a credit-granting score of 50 for each CLEP exam; however, each institution reserves the right to set its own credit-granting policy, which may differ from ACE.

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) accepts selected CLEP examinations for credit in approved courses. Students are encouraged to review the CLEP Course Equivalency Table to determine which examinations are accepted and the corresponding course credit that may be awarded. Students should also consult with their academic advisor to determine how CLEP credit may apply to their degree program requirements.

Important: Official CLEP scores must be received directly from the College Board on an official CLEP transcript and a PLA Request Form must be completed before academic credit can be awarded.

How to Schedule Your CLEP Exam with PVAMU Testing Services?

Choose an Exam

  • Visit the CLEP exam topics page and choose the exam you want to take. Go to the page for that exam to see what the exam covers, what it costs, and resources to help you prepare for it. (If you are familiar with several exam topics and having trouble deciding, no worries, multiple exams can be purchased during the same transaction.)
  • Click the Register button, once you have decided on an exam.

Sign in to My CLEP

  • To continue the registration process, you will be asked to sign in to My CLEP student portal using your College Board account. If you do not have one, you should sign up for a new account.
    • Note: College Board has updated all student accounts, including My CLEP student portal. If you did not sign in to your account and verify your email before March 23, 2023, and you have not already done so, you’ll have to create a new account to access your saved information (your personal profile, test scores, etc.).

Review Personal Information

  • Review your address and contact information verifying that all information is correct.
  • If eligible for DANTES military funding, complete the requested information.
  • Optional Demographics questions are available.

Make Your Exam Selection

  • You must first agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Answer the “About Your Registration” question.
    • Answer “Yes” and enter your voucher code if paying with a voucher
    • Answer “No” if paying with a credit card or are DANTES eligible.
  • Select the exam: you are only able to select one exam subject at a time, but you will be given the opportunity to register for another exam prior to check out.
  • Select a preferred testing location: select to take your exam at a physical test center.
  • Test Prep Materials: you have the option to purchase an examination guide.

Send Your Score

  • During registration and prior to testing, you may select up to 2 institutions to have your score sent to for free.
  • After you have taken your exam, you must pay a fee to send your transcript (score) to any institution.

Check Out

  • Complete the required fields prior to reviewing, confirming, and submitting payment.
    • $97 – Exam fee paid online with credit card.
    • If you have a voucher code, your exam fee will be covered, but you will need to enter payment information if you are purchasing an examination guide.
    • If you’re a DANTES-funded test taker, you will see the price has been adjusted to $0.00.

Scheduling Instructions

  • CLEP Appointment Form: You will complete the personal information demographics. Then you will see the available test dates.
  • Payment: Once you have completed the registration form, you will be directed to the PV Marketplace to pay for the exam fee.
    • In the PV Marketplace, select “CLEP”
    • Then click on “Add to Cart”.
    • After answering the question: “Are you a current PVAMU student?”.
      • $25 – Administration fee for PVAMU Students
      • $50 – Administration fee for Non PVAMU Students
    • Click “Continue” and then “Checkout”.
    • Fill out the shipping and payment details, then submit your order.
    • A copy of your payment receipt will be sent to PVAMU Testing Services
  • Request Accommodations (if applicable): If you have a learning or physical disability that would prevent you from taking a CLEP exam under standard conditions, you may request accommodations. Examinees should go here to review the guidelines to request test accommodations with our test center.

Appointment Confirmation

After scheduling your CLEP exam with PVAMU Testing Services, you will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours of submitting your appointment request.

The confirmation email will include:

  • Your scheduled test date and time.
  • Important test-day requirements, procedures, expectations, and policies.
  • Photo identification requirements.
  • Guest and visitor policies.

Prepare for Your Exam

  • We encourage all test takers to prepare thoroughly before their scheduled testing appointment. A variety of official CLEP study materials, practice exams, and preparation resources are available through the College Board. Calculator Information

  • For select CLEP science and mathematics examinations, as well as the Financial Accounting exam, an on-screen calculator is integrated into the testing software. Personal calculators are not permitted for these exams.

What to Bring on Test Day

  • A valid registration ticket from the My CLEP student portal.
  • Registration forms or printouts that are required by the test center. Make sure you have filled out all necessary paperwork in advance of your testing date.
  • Administration fees. Each test center charges an additional fee and sets its own policy for payment.
  • A government-issued physical identification such as a driver’s license, passport, or other official government ID that includes your photograph and signature. You will be asked to show this identification to be admitted to the testing area. The first and last name on your ID must match the name on your registration ticket.

ID Requirements

  • The ID you bring must meet the following criteria:
    • Be a government-issued physical ID.
    • Be an original document—photocopied documents are not acceptable.
    • Be valid and current—expired documents (bearing expiration dates that have passed) are not acceptable, no matter how recently they may have expired.
    • Bear the test taker’s full name, in English language characters, exactly as it appears on the registration ticket, including the order of the names.
    • Middle initials are optional and only need to match the first letter of the middle name when present on both the ticket and the identification.
    • Bear a recent recognizable photograph that clearly matches the test taker.
    • Include the test taker’s signature.
    • Be in good condition with clearly legible text and a clearly visible photograph.
    • Military test takers must bring their military ID.
    • Homeschooled and high school students: If you do not have the required government-issued ID, please complete a Student ID Form which is valid for one year. The form must be accompanied by a recognizable photo with a school or notary seal overlapping the photo. The form must be signed in front of a school official or notary. If you fail to present appropriate identification, you’ll not be allowed to test
  • Examples of other types of acceptable physical identification include:
    • Government-issued passport with name, photograph, and signature
    • Driver’s license with name, photograph, and signature
    • State or province ID issued by the motor vehicle agency with name, photograph, and signature
    • Military ID with name, photograph, and electronic signature
    • National ID with name, photograph, and signature
    • Tribal ID card with name, photograph, and signature
    • A naturalization card or certificate of citizenship with name, photograph, and signature
    • A permanent resident card (green card) with name, photograph, and signature

Requesting CLEP Credit at PVAMU

If you achieve a passing score on your CLEP exam, please complete the PLA Request Form.

CLEP will send your official transcript directly to PVAMU Testing Services, which typically takes 2–3 weeks. Once the transcript is received, Testing Services will submit the necessary documentation to Enrollment Services to authorize the awarding of eligible academic credit.

CLEP Retest Policy

Please review the following CLEP retest requirements before scheduling another exam:

  • Candidates may not retake a CLEP exam of the same title within three months of the previous test date.
  • Violations of the CLEP retest policy will result in the exam being declared invalid, scores being canceled, and all associated testing fees being forfeited.
  • If you have previously taken the same exam and are uncertain of your original test date, notify the test administrator before testing.
  • DANTES-funded military examinees are eligible for only one government-funded attempt per exam title. Any subsequent attempts must be paid for by the examinee.

CLEP Scores and Transcripts

  • When registering for a CLEP exam, you may send your scores to two institutions at no additional cost. Learn more about score reporting here.

College Composition and Spanish with Writing Score Availability

CLEP College Composition and CLEP Spanish with Writing include mandatory essays that require additional scoring. These exams are scored twice each month, and official scores are generally available 2–3 weeks after the test date.

Students will receive an email notification when their scores are available online.
