Purpose

The Outstanding Early Researcher Award honors PVAMU’s junior faculty and research scientists who are early in their research career, for their outstanding activities and accomplishments to establish an externally funded sponsored program and related research activities, demonstrating a strong prospect to elevate PVAMU’s research mission. The activities and accomplishments of those selected are highly meritorious and worthy of recognition. The selected personnel is expected to function as a role model among junior faculty and research scientists for increasing externally funded sponsored research at PVAMU.

Eligibility

A nominee for the Outstanding Early Researcher Award shall be a full-time member of the faculty/staff who holds an appointment at PVAMU for a period not less than two and not more than five years. Nominees must have a consistent and distinguished record of activities and/or accomplishments to establish an externally funded sponsored program and related research activities in the last 2 to 3 years, demonstrating a strong prospect to elevate PVAMU overall research mission. The nominee should demonstrate a structured outstanding activities in the following five categories:

  1. Proposals submitted
  2. Grants/contracts received
  3. Research expenditures
  4. Outcomes and Impact of Sponsored Research Activities
  5. Sponsored research leadership activities (at state, national and international level)

Award Amount

Amount will be announced yearly. The award is taxable.

Nomination Process

A call for nominations is issued in Campus Announcements. Nominations are open to all members of the PV community. Self-nominations are not acceptable.

Selection Process and Award

The Vice President or his/her designee shall appoint a review committee made up of faculty and staff. Previous awardees, if available, will be included on the committee.

The committee will review nominations and may interview candidates and request additional documentation supporting the accomplishments. From those nominations, the committee may select up to three finalists and make its recommendation to the Vice President by March 1.

The Vice President will select the Award winner from the list of three finalists presented by the committee. The announcement and recognition of the individual(s) selected will be made during the Faculty/Staff Awards Ceremony in spring.

Nominations should include:

  • Nomination/cover letter (2 pages max)
  • A current curriculum vita (10 pages max)
  • List of the nominee’s outstanding achievements in the five categories (5 pages max)
    • Proposals submitted (by year, PI or Co-PI (share), funding amount, sponsor, project title, duration, Internal/external, state/national)
    • Grants/contracts received (by year, PI or Co-PI (share), funding amount, sponsor, project title, duration, Internal/external, state/national)
    • Research expenditures (by the nominee; grouped by year and project)
    • Outcomes and Impact of Sponsored Research Activities (graduate, undergraduate students mentored and matriculated, journal publications, conferences, abstracts, outreach, etc.)
    • Sponsored research leadership activities (at state, national and international level)
