Open Educational Resource Initiative (OER)

Textbook Affordability and Open Educational Resources (OER) Initiative

In 2015, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) launched the stateā€™s ambitious higher education strategic plan dubbed 60x30TX whose goal is to ensure that by 2030, 60% of Texans between ages 24-26 years should be holders of certificates or degrees. This means that the State wants to have an educated population, one where there is an increase in college completion rates while at the same time ensuring the graduates have employable skills. Above all, the strategic plan wants universities to look for ways to ensure that when the students graduate, they have manageable debt.

One of the goals of the Texas A&M University Systemā€™s strategic plan for 2016 to 2021 is to ensure that all the system schools remain affordable and accessible. This goal is amplified in the 2016-2021 Prairie View A&M University strategic plan. One way to support PVAMU students to timely complete programs they are enrolled in and to reduce the student debt burden is for the university to implement initiatives to eliminate or reduce the cost of textbooks.

2019 – 2020 High Impact Practices (HIPs): Technical Support Initiative

High-impact practices, or HIPs, are active learning practices that promote deep learning through student engagement. Educational research suggests that HIPS increase rates of student retention and success. To improve the indicators of student success at PVAMU, our units across Academic Affairs are encouraged to submit a proposal focusing on implementing or strengthening a currently utilized HIP — internships, writing intensive courses, first-year seminar or experience, service learning, undergraduate research, learning communities, ePortolios, etc.

The 2019 – 2020 HIPs Initiative was very competitive. Eighteen impressive proposals were submitted representing each college/school of the university.

Scholars in Undergraduate Math and Science

SUMS LogoThe College of Arts and Sciences at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) was awarded a National Science Foundation S-STEM grant. This S-STEM project, titled SUMS (Scholars in Undergraduate Math and Science), will enable PVAMU to enhance its mission by allowing a total of twenty students (10 students starting in 2020 and 10 students starting in 2021) to receive scholarships ranging from $5000 to $10,000 per academic year for up to four years of academic support.

This scholarship program is targeted toward first-year low-income, academically talented students in the STEM fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. These scholarships can be a significant part of a studentā€™s scholarship package.

As a member of the SUMS program, a student will have access to the following:

  • receive mentorship support from faculty, industry partners, and student peers
  • a learning community devoted to all four years of undergraduate study, from admittance to graduation
  • opportunities for early research engagement
  • exposure to professional development workshops

Currently, the SUMS program is seeking applicants for its first cohort of students, those looking to enter PVAMU in the Fall 2020 semester. The application will soon be available, with a deadline of March 1, 2020. Interested students should visit https://www.pvamu.edu/bcas/sums/ or contact sums@pvamu.edu for more information.
