Nathelyne Archie-Kennedy Building

The School of Architecture is housed in the Nathelyne Archie-Kennedy Building. Selected to design the building from five nationally recognized architects who participated in the competition Michael Rotondi of Roto Architects created this most unique facility. HKS of Dallas served as the Architect of Record. The design began in 2002, with ground breaking held in August 2003, and the School of Architecture moved into the 105,000 sq. ft. building in August 2005.

1st floor of Nathelyne Archie Kennedy Building:

  • Administrators Office/ Conference:  School of Architecture administrative office is located in room 100, West end of building.  Dean’s office, conference, administrators offices are located in this space.
  • Studios and workshop: 3rd, 4th and Grad studios are located in the area. A small workshop for Graduate students are equipped with 3D printer, Laser cutter and plotter.
  • Lecture room (Room 115):  Large lecture room is located in the right next to the lobby area.
  • Galleries:  Exhibition/ presentation space and two Galleries are located in the 1st floors.
  • Storage: There are flat files and cupboards for use by departments to store drawings for accreditation purposes.

2nd floor of Nathelyne Archie Kennedy Building

  • Digital Classroom/ computer lab (Room 223): This university maintained computer classroom is heavily used for instructional purposes by several departments in the SOA. For regularly scheduled classes this room is assigned through the SOA. For occasional use outside regular class time, this room is reserved by request to the Dean’s office.
  • Print Room (Room 225): This room contains printers, plotters scanners as well as both PC and Mac computers. It is heavily used by all students.
  • Printing and plotting room (Room 225): Scanners, both conventional and wide, printer and plotters are found in this area.
  • Digital Media Arts Computer Lab (Room 221): Mac Pro computers, printer and plotter are located in this space.
  • Digital Media Arts Production Lab (Room 226): Located near the offices of the faculty for this program this recently remodeled room (2017) offers work space and production equipment.
  • Library (Room 253): The John B. Coleman Library is located across the street from the SOA facility. It holds over 350,000 volumes, including over 800 print periodical titles with access to several thousand electronic full-text scholarly journals. The library is also a participating member of a statewide database-sharing program known as TexShare, and a member of the Houston Area Research Libraries Consortium (HARLIC).    The SOA maintains a small reference center on the 2nd floor of the building. While receiving support from the main University Library system, having access to topical editions offers benefits to the students allowing for a quiet place to study and do research.
  • TIPHC Center:  Texas Institute for Preservation of History and Culture Center is located right next to the library. TIPHC gallery and archive area is located on the 1st floor.
  • Faculty and Staff offices/ lounge/ conference:  Faculty and staff offices, lounge and three conference rooms are located in the 2nd floor.
  • Student lounge:  Vending machines, microwave and tables are located in this space.
  • Storage: There are flat files and cupboards for use by departments to store drawings for accreditation purposes.

3rd floor of Nathelyne Archie Kennedy Building

  • Studios and workshop: Architecture 1st and 2nd design studios are located in the area. Digital Media Arts studios and workshop are located in this area.
  • CURES research center:  The Community Urban Rural Enhancement Service Center (CURES) center is located at the West end of building.
