Implementation Science

“Implementation science is the study of methods to promote the adoption and integration of evidence-based practices, interventions and policies into routine health care and public health settings.” (NIH, nd)

Implementation science bridges the gap between research and practice by examining how evidence-based programs work in the real world. Benefits of applying an implementation science framework may include improved health outcomes, decreased health disparities, and reduced program costs.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), an independent, nonprofit organization, created the Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) framework to facilitate strategic planning for sharing information and for putting new evidence into practice. Engagement of the patient and other stakeholders is central in this framework. The Dissemination and Implementation framework is a guide for executing clinical effectiveness research (CER) findings in primary care. “CER compares the effectiveness of two or more interventions or approaches to health care, examining their risks and benefits.” (PCORI, nd).

Training APRNs to Implement CER Findings Project

Prairie View A&M University’s Dr. Sharisse Hebert has been selected for Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award funding for her project, “Training Advanced Practice Nurses (APRN) to Implement CER in Primary Care Settings.” Dr. Hebert will lead a project selected for funding to provide a three-day intensive course to inform Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) of PCORI-funded Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) findings, provide training in implementation, and post-training support for uptake of the treatments in patient care. The University of Texas Health Science Center Houston School of Public Health and the Harris Health System are project collaborators. https://www.pcori.org/research-results/2020/training-advanced-practice-nurses-aprn-implement-cer-primary-care-settings
