Overview

The School of Public and Allied Health at Prairie View A&M University is a distinguished academic sector of the institution dedicated to excellence in education, research, and community engagement in the fields of public health and allied health sciences. With a strong commitment to improving population health and well-being, the school plays a vital role in preparing future professionals and advancing knowledge in these critical disciplines.

The School’s mission is the pursuit of cutting-edge research that generates evidence-based practices and contributes to the body of knowledge in public and allied health. Faculty members engage in interdisciplinary research collaborations, exploring diverse areas such as disease prevention, health disparities, human movement, nutrition, athletic/exercise performance, special populations, community interventions, and more. Through their research endeavors, they strive to make meaningful contributions that inform public health policies and enhance the overall well-being of individuals and communities.

The new School of Public and Allied Health will have a significant impact on undergraduate students in Texas by providing them with a comprehensive education in public health and allied health fields.  Through courses on health promotion, disease prevention, epidemiology, and biostatistics, biomechanics students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to improve individual quality of life and contribute to healthier communities.

The school’s strategic location between the semi-rural area of Waller County and the urban center of Houston presents unique challenges and opportunities.  Students will have the chance to address public health issues that vary in nature, from rural health disparities to urban health challenges, allowing them to gain practical experience in diverse settings.  In essence, the new School of Public and Allied Health will serve as a vanguard for promoting health and well-being in Texas by training a new generation of public health professionals who can make a positive impact on the health of individuals and communities.

Prairie View A&M University became the first Historically Black College and University in Texas to offer the program. The establishment of a public health school at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) holds immense importance for several reasons. Firstly, it provides an opportunity to address health disparities that disproportionately affect all communities. HBCUs have a long history of serving minority populations and having a public health school at such institutions can lead to targeted research, interventions, and policies aimed at improving the health outcomes of marginalized communities.
