PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (October 22, 2025) — Prairie View A&M University continues to advance research in sustainable poultry nutrition with a new grant of more than $240,000 awarded to Jayant Lohakare, Ph.D., a research professor at the Cooperative Agricultural Research Center (CARC).
The project, supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) through a subaward from the University of Arkansas, focuses on identifying alternative protein sources to replace soybean meal in broiler chicken diets. The research aims to improve feed efficiency, reduce production costs, and promote more environmentally sustainable poultry production.
Dr. Lohakare brought this portion of the USDA-funded project to PVAMU when he joined the university in July 2022, continuing work initiated at his previous institution. The subaward account was established at PVAMU in mid-2023, and the project has since moved forward under a no-cost extension granted by USDA-NIFA.
Through this collaboration, Dr. Lohakare has provided mentorship for graduate and postdoctoral researchers while supporting scientific exchange through conference participation and publication activities.
The USDA-funded effort reinforces PVAMU’s research capacity and strengthens partnerships with peer institutions working toward innovative, sustainable solutions in animal agriculture.
