February

  • Chemical Engineering is being honored for this year’s Engineering Week Ceremony with the Outstanding Staff Member (Charlesedder Love), Outstanding Adjunct (Dr. Ernest McIntyre), and Outstanding Teacher of the Year (Dr. Nabila Shamim).  In addition our Outstanding students of the year were honored at the Ceremony (Freshman: Jaileha Williams, Sophomore: Taylor Hawkins, Junior: Carol Akpan; Senior: Kefah Mongare).

2023

November

  • Four Senior Design groups for the Department of Chemical Engineering presented their projects to IAC and alumni in EnCARB 222. Alumni Blaine Sanders graciously provided equipment which allowed a hybrid delivery of the presentations.  A big thank you to INEOS who provided breakfast and beverages for the day (11/18/2023).

  • The Department of Chemical Engineering participated in Senior Day on the Hill at Encarb.  Dr. Reeves and Dr. McIntyre and Chidi demonstrated a shell and tube heat exchanger to high school Seniors interested in Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering (11/18/2023).

October 

  • The Department of Chemical Engineering , CEES and several students participated for the second year in a row along at Houston’s Energy Day.  Energy day is Houston’s largest annual Free family festival showcasing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) that teach students and their families about the various forms of energy (10/21/2023).

September 

  • Students from Chemical Engineering were invited to participate in the Celanese Sponsored CCPS Student Process Safety workshop at EnCARB room 222, which was organized by Dr. Dada.  At the end of the workshop, AIChE-CCPS issued a certificate of participation to the students (9/22-9/23).

  • Faculty, Staff and Students from Chemical Engineering participated in NOBCChE’s 50th annual meeting on September 11-14 at New Orleans Louisiana.  The Annual Conferences provides students opportunities to network with professionals in their field.

 

March

  • The recruitment team for the Department of Chemical Engineering participated in the Senior Academic Preview Day on the Hill on March 25, 2023.  Welcome to all the newly admitted fall 2023 freshmen and transfer students and families!  Thank you to Drs. Shamim and Dada for representing the Department!

February

  • CHEG Town Hall :Wednesday, February 1st in C.L. Wilson 203 at 3 p.m. Presentations by student organizations and expectations for the semester by Dr. Reeves will be covered during the Town Hall Meeting.
  • Spring CHEG Seminar – The first seminar of the semester will be held on  Friday, February 3rd, 2023 at 1:30 P.M. in C.L.Wilson 203. An information session with speaker, Dr. Ashlee N. Ford Versypt from the University of Buffalo will be held at 11:10 A.M.

January

  • The Department of Chemical Engineering participated at Energy in Industry on January 28, 2023.  Thank you to Dr. Shamim, Dr. Antoine, and students Shirley Kennebrew, Jerina Mnyapara, Olufemi Duyilemi and Mackenzie Stephney for representing PVAMU at the event.

  • On November 18, the College celebrated their Fall Festival, which was sponsored by Fluor Corporation.  There was music, food, games, pumpkin carving and an obstacle course.

      

  • On November 14, Dr. Sheena Reeves received the 2022 Distinguished Service Award of MAC-AIChE along with former faculty member, Dr. Audie Thompson.  Congratulations!!!!

  • Congratulations to Daisaku Gicheha on his AIChE (2022) Presentation at the AIChE Annual Conference in Phoenix Arizona.

  • Congratulations to our PVAMU, Halliburton Cohort 2 Recruiting Inclusive Students into Energy Scholars Program (RISE) scholars (2022-2023): Kefah ‘Sonko’ Mongare and Jerina Mnyapara. For more information please visit: PVAMU, Halliburton celebrate second year of RISE program 
  • Thank you to Tesla who hosted 76 students for the College of Engineering at their Gigafactory TX (GFTX) facilities in Austin for a mechanical and electrical engineering bootcamp from November 15-16th.

October

  • Thank you Chris Galvez and the students of SHPE for representing all the departments of the College of Engineering in the homecoming float parade (October 29, 2022).

       

  • Thank you to Dr. Carl McIntyre for representing the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Lone Star College – CyFair  Transfer Fair on October 18.

  • On October 15, the faculty from the Department of Chemical Engineering (Drs. Emmanuel Dada, Kazeem Olanrewaju, Nabila Shamim, and Sheena Reeves), along  with CEES, and members from the student organization, AIChE, had an interactive demonstration at Houston’s Energy Day.  Energy day is Houston’s largest annual Free family festival showcasing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) that teach students and their families about the various forms of energy.

  • On October 12, the Student Organizations of College of Engineering held an open house in the corridor of C.L. Wilson to recruit new members.

  • The Woodlands Chapter of Jack and Jill brought 30 prospective high school students and their parent chaperones to the PVAMU campus on October 8th for a tour of the campus, tailgating and PVAMU football (PVAMU vs. Southern University) to provide the students with an HBCU experience. Ms. Jasmine Murray of the College of Engineering worked together with Mr. Jonathan McKissack of the Office of Student Recruitment to facilitate the campus tour. The Jack and Jill group were gifted t-shirts by COE.

  • Congratulations to Carol Akpan! Carol was awarded 1st place for an outstanding poster presentation at the NOBCChE 2022 National conference in Orlando Florida.

  • Thank you to all the Chemical Engineering students (Jose Luis Ondo Mba Adjibi, Ezranequia Lesha Tatmon, Carol Akpan, Zsamia Barnes, Niah Hamilton, Kahlil Johnson and Jerina Mnyapara) for representing the Department of Chemical Engineering at the NOBCChE conference at Orlando Florida.  A big thanks also goes to Ms. Love, the Administrative Assistant of the Department of Chemical Engineering, for taking care of the students and ensuring they were safe.
  • Kayla Freeman was featured “On the Rise” on September 22, 2022. Ms. Freeman is a participant in the PVAMU Research & Innovation for Scholarly Excellence (RISE) Faculty RISE – Undergraduate Research Grant Program .  Please view the student spotlight article here: “On the RISE.”
  • Thank you Dr. Gyamerah for the outstanding job that he has done in leading the Chemical Engineering Department as the Interim Department Head for the past four years.  His leadership have had an impact on the Chemical Engineering Department through curriculum revision and increased research activity.  His influence will positively impact students for years to come.  Under his leadership the Chemical Engineering Department moved up in ranking to #6 among the Best Chemical Engineering Schools in the state of Texas. We wish him well as he moves back into the role as a full professor and continue to focus on the Formatively Assessed Student-Centered Instruction & Active Learning (FASCIAL) program which aims to increase retention and graduation rates among students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
  • Welcome Dr. Sheena Reeves to her new role as the Interim Department Head of Chemical Engineering, effective September 1, 2022. Dr. Reeves is the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award for the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering, the Outstanding Faculty Service Award for the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering, the National Society of Black Engineers: Houston Professionals STEM Teacher of the Year Award, and the Faculty Senate, Clement E. Glenn Outstanding Service Award.  She is an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and received a special recognition Award for her service, the South Texas Section (STS) AIChE Outstanding Young Professional Award.  Dr. Reeves has received over $5M in research awards and has over 60 scholarly publications and presentations.

  • From March 16-18, 2022, the College of Engineering at PVAMU hosted the ASEE Gulf-Southwest Conference. Congratulations to PVAMU’s Chemical Engineering Associate Professor,  Dr. Sheena Reeves, who was selected as the recipient of the Best Paper Award (paper titled “Factors Affecting the Success Rate of First Year Chemical Engineering Students”).

February

  • AIChE Awards: Dr. Dada won the MAC 30th Anniversary Henry Brown Award for his leadership and advancement for minorities from pre-1990 through 2000 and Dr. Olanrewaju won the James Wei Award for broadening participation for minorities from 2011 through 2020. The awards were part of the 30th anniversary of MAC (Minority Affairs Committee).

2021

November

  • Inaugural PVAMU Order of the Engineering Ceremony.  Three students (Kaylon Atkinson, Nathan Warren, and Alessia Williams) and one faculty member (Dr. Safwat Shakir) took the ethics pledge and received their rings. (November 18,2021)

October:

  • Phillips 66’s Black Employee Network Case Study Student Competition (October 1, 2021). Two  interdisciplinary teams of students from Prairie View A&M University under the guidance of faculty mentors Dr. Keisha Antoine (Chemical Engineering), Dr. Irvin Osborne-Lee (Chemical Engineering) and Mr. Clyde McNeil (College of Business)  placed 1st and 2nd in the P66 BEN Competition.
    The inaugural competition took place in 2018 and was limited to Finance and Accounting majors.  Since then, the competition has expanded to include IT and Engineering majors.

  • The National Science Foundation awarded $1.7M to Dr. Michael Gyamerah (PI) and Dr. Lealon Martin (Co-PI) with six Co-PIs from the College of Engineering to undertake research in “Transforming the Classroom into an Active Learning Environment to Improve Comprehension, Retention, and Graduation Rates” using a new teaching strategy the ” Formatively Assessed Student-Centered Instruction and Active Learning (FASCIAL) ” that would engage students in the teaching and learning process.
