Since receiving her Bachelor of Social Work (’93) and Master of Sociology ( ’96) degrees from PVAMU, alumna Valerie Johnson-Reed worked as a Licensed Social Worker for 10 years. Deciding to change careers, Valerie has now been a special education teacher for the last 15 years.

Having previously taught on the elementary school level, Valerie is currently a middle school English language arts teacher at Kahla Middle School in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. She was also nominated as Teacher of the Year.

“After suffering the loss of my brother, mother, and husband (Chris Reed, Class of 1997), God gave me the vision to write about those experiences,” says Valerie. She’s written and published three books about grief and loss entitled Stay Strong, Finish Strong!, Through Micah’s Eyes, and Grieving Under God’s Grace.

In February of this year, Valerie was featured as a presenter in a TED Masterclass in San Antonio, Texas. Her memberships include Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., The Order of The Eastern Star, and The Wisconsin Sleepers (Official Group Page). Valerie is also one of the faces for Black Women Widows Empowered – Empowering Widows Back to Wholeness, and a motivational speaker.
