LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University department of athletics announced the hiring of Tim Smith as Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations.
Smith has spent the last five seasons in the SWAC, and eight years in the league in his career.
“It’s an absolute honor for me to be part of such a historic University. I’m grateful for the opportunity that Dr. [Felecia] Nave and AD [Derek] Horne gave me to come in and be an asset to an already well-established University,” Smith said.
Smith arrives at Alcorn after holding the same position at Arkansas-Pine Bluff this past year. He supervised a facility team for all UAPB athletic facilities during athletic and non-athletic events. Smith also oversaw apparel contracts and budgets for all 16 sports.
Prior to UAPB, Smith spent over four years at Prairie View A&M from March 2015 to Aug. 2019. He served in numerous roles including special assistant to the AD, head equipment manager, game operations, facility manager, special events and football operations.
“Not only is he familiar with the SWAC, but Tim Smith has worked in many different capacities in his career and will aid us in many aspects. From his experience in coaching, equipment, facilities, budgeting, operations and travel, Tim will give us a big boost with how we function internally and we’re very excited to have him,” director of athletics Derek Horne said.
It was his second stint at PVAMU as he began his career on the football staff from Aug. 2009 to July 2012. Over the three years, he worked as special assistant to the head football coach, offensive quality control, defensive quality control, strength and conditioning and football operations.
Smith went on to Blinn JC in Aug. 2012 where he spent a season as an assistant football coach and facilities. He then worked two years at Cisco College as associate head coach, offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator before returning to PVAMU.
Smith lettered in football at PVAMU from 2006-08 and graduated with a degree in history in May 2009. He’s currently pursuing a Master’s degree in education.
