PRAIRIE VIEW, TX (May 27, 2025) — Ian Ainomugisha, a senior mathematics major at Prairie View A&M University, is exploring an intricate mathematical framework under the guidance of his RISE faculty mentor, Lanre Akinyemi, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics. His research focuses on the stability and dynamics of solitary waves within that framework.
“The feeling of inspiration I’d get from seeing the incredible things not just the faculty, but also my peers, were achieving through research,” Ian reflects on the highlight of his RISE program experience. “Despite my limited research experience, I immediately felt welcome.”

R&I Month 2025: Student Research Day
Upon graduation, Ian aims to leverage his analytical skills to address real-world challenges. “I plan to enter the workforce and solve problems through mathematical analysis,” he shares confidently.
Ian’s research on the stability and solitary wave dynamics of higher-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations with time-dependent potential, recently published in a prestigious Q1 journal, explores applications ranging from solitary waves to oceanic natural hazards. Q1 journals are ranked in the top 25% of their field based on impact and citation metrics, making publication a notable achievement for any researcher.
“It is a privilege to have our work accepted by an esteemed journal,” Ian said. “Which will maximize the potential of our findings to be accessed and built upon.”
Dr. Akinyemi, proud of Ian’s achievements, emphasized the significance of Ian’s contributions. “Ian has been an integral part of my research during the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters through the RISE program,” Akinyemi said. “His strong analytical skills and diligent attention to detail consistently set him apart. He tackles every task with impressive precision, a crucial trait for success in mathematical research.
The RISE program is an initiative led by Prairie View A&M University’s Vice President of Research and Innovation, Magesh Rajan, Ph.D., P.E. The program focuses on advancing critical research and innovation while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among PVAMU faculty, students, and university partners.
Ian Ainomugisha exemplifies Prairie View A&M University’s commitment to fostering groundbreaking research and preparing students like him for impactful careers in mathematics. His journey through the RISE Program is a clear reflection of the university’s standard — Excellence Lives Here.
