PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (December 9, 2025) — Prairie View A&M University has secured nearly $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, NIH–National Cancer Institute, to develop a Certificate in Computational Genomics and Biomedical Data Science—a program designed to prepare students for rapidly growing careers at the intersection of biology, computation and health.
Dennis Daniels, M.P.H., D.P.H., Director and Professor of the Texas Undergraduate Medical Academy at Prairie View A&M University; Sr. Associate Dean of the School of Public and Allied Health at Prairie View A&M University and Professor of Humanities in Medicine at the Texas A&M College of Medicine will lead the initiative. Co- investigators Dumitru Iacobas, Ph.D.; Naznin Sultana, Ph.D.; Jeremy Kiesler, M.S.; Quyen Huynh, M.S. and Tenley Sablatzky, M.L.I,S., all PVAMU, will support the project.
The new certificate will train students in genomic analysis, biomedical data interpretation and computational tools used to investigate complex diseases, including cancer. The program aims to strengthen PVAMU’s capacity to produce graduates who are ready for advanced study and competitive roles in modern biomedical and health research.
The award reinforces PVAMU’s commitment to expanding access to high-demand STEM fields and building a highly skilled workforce equipped with the skills needed to drive innovation in data-intensive science and precision medicine.
