Jorden Gidrey

Jorden Gidrey

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – For Jorden Gidrey, a graduating senior from Prairie View A&M University’s College of Nursing, the path to becoming a nurse has been defined by resilience, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to growth. As a male nursing student in an underrepresented field, Gidrey is not only stepping into his profession—he is helping redefine it.

Jorden has secured employment in an emergency department at a nationally recognized pediatric hospital, a role that aligns with his passion for high-acuity care and making an immediate impact. “I selected the pediatric emergency room because I love the adrenaline rush and strive to inspire the next generation,” he shared.

His journey to this milestone was not without challenges. “I wasn’t a straight-A student, and nursing school did not come easily to me,” Gidrey reflected. “The most inspiring part of my journey was the ability to keep going and digging deeper even after failure.” This perseverance not only shaped him as a nurse but also strengthened him as a person.

From the beginning, Jorden was intentional about his purpose. “I chose PVAMU because of its legacy of achievement and preparation,” he said. His commitment to representation also fueled his journey. “Black males make up less than 1% of nurses, and I wanted to be part of changing that statistic.”

Beyond the classroom, Gidrey demonstrated leadership, service, and scholarly engagement. He served as a Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) mentor, providing academic support to fellow students, and as a counselor in the Nursing Summer BRIDGE Program, helping pre-nursing students transition into the rigor of upper-division nursing. Additionally, as a RISE undergraduate researcher, he worked alongside faculty to identify best practices to support pre-nursing student success.

His foundation in the military further strengthened his discipline, leadership, and commitment to service—qualities that have been evident throughout his academic and clinical journey.

Faculty have witnessed his growth firsthand. College of Nursing Assistant Professor Dr. Antonea’ Jackson, who has worked with Jorden since his pre-nursing years, shared, “Jorden has grown and matured a lot both personally and professionally since I first met him as a pre-nursing student. In his senior year, I have been so proud of the obstacles he’s overcome—his fortitude and determination. When he shared that he received his dream job offer, I told him all he owed me was to be great. He quickly responded, ‘I will.’ And I’m certain he will.”

Jorden’s story is one of persistence, purpose, and progress—hallmarks of a Prairie View nurse. As he transitions into professional practice, he carries forward not only the skills to provide exceptional care but also the responsibility to lead, represent, and inspire future generations.
