The mission of Prairie View A&M University Alternative Teacher Certification Program is to prepare highly qualified, diverse, curriculum focused and technology savvy teachers for classrooms through research-based curriculum, supported internship and relevant professional development opportunities.

The Prairie View A&M University Alternative Teacher Certification Program is a program committed to providing schools with highly qualified teachers in high demand areas. Our ATCP program is designed for persons who excel in a diverse, relaxed and motivating environment. We apply research-based teaching methods, effective strategies and technology-based innovation. We are committed to new teachers who want to hone their teaching skills according to proven effective teaching strategies and the wisdom of those that have been successful in the classroom.

We are launching a search for qualified teacher candidates. Our plan is to lead our program to new heights, by making PVAMU one of the leading providers of teachers in the Greater Houston area. As we continue to transform our program into a stellar program, we invite persons who are passionate about children and the teaching and learning process. Our program is conducive to persons who are looking for professional and personal growth.

ATCP Handbook

Path to Your Teaching Career

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree
  • Pass the pre-admission content test (TX PACT) for the area in which you are seeking certification
  • Be admitted to the Graduate School

  • Be admitted to Alternative Teacher Certification Program
  • Take 6 courses (pay tuition and fees), attend workshops, training and complete 30 observations hours
  • May begin seeking an internship after three courses and 30 observation hours (this is a teaching position with full teacher pay)
  • Apply for intern certificate; Begin teaching; Pay ATCP fee in installments $3,200 (after obtaining internship)
  • Receive full teacher salary and complete coursework (six courses must be completed)
  • Take Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities Exam (PPR)
  • Pass 2 exams, complete 6 courses, complete 30 observation hours, receive a recommendation from your school and ATCP Director
  • At the end of the program, the successful candidate will receive a Texas Standard Teaching Certificate
