About Us
The Whitlowe R. Green College of Education at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is one of the oldest educator preparation programs in Texas. Originally founded on April 19, 1879, as the "Prairie View State Normal School," the primary purpose was to train African American teachers. Today, the college is formally known as the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education.
Key Milestones in the History of the College:
- 1879: The Texas Legislature established the Prairie View State Normal School for the "Training of Colored Teachers," making it the first state-supported college for African Americans in Texas.
- 1887 and 1890: The curriculum was expanded to include agriculture, mechanical arts, and domestic sciences after the institution became a land-grant college.
- 1932: The college began offering graduate programs, which included degrees in rural education and school administration.
- 1945: The institution was renamed Prairie View University, authorizing the College to offer more comprehensive university-level courses.
- 21st Century: The college adopted the name Whitlowe R. Green College of Education to honor Mr. Whitlowe R. Green, a retired economics teacher who gifted $2.1 million to the university.
Today, the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education operates out of the Wilhelmina Fitzgerald Delco Building on the main campus of Prairie View A&M University. The College has a rich legacy of producing some of the nation’s most distinguished educators, building and district level leaders, and higher education professionals. The College offers traditional undergraduate degrees, and certification programs (i.e. teacher, school counselor, educational diagnostician, principal, and superintendent).
All teacher education programs offered by the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education are fully accredited by the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).
