May 24 –  The Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Cooperative Extension Program (CEP) received a $191,500 4-H Tech Changemakers grant to help bridge the digital divide between teens and adults.

The 4-H Tech Changemakers program uses a teens-as-teachers approach with teen leaders learning digital skills to teach them to adults. Through this process, the teens will become certified Tech Changemakers and work in partnership with their 4-H educator to use turnkey ‘grab n’ go’ lesson plans to teach digital skills to adults in the community. The lesson plans will focus on digital skills like using Microsoft Word to create resumes and safely navigating the internet to find the best job search websites.

The program will be implemented in Cameron, Dallas, El Paso, and Waller counties.

4-H Youth Development Program Leader Rukeia Draw-Hood, Ph.D.,  will serve as the grant’s principal investigator and Extension Program Specialist Guadalupe Castro will serve as co-principal investigator. The National 4-H Council is funding the opportunity through corporate partners (Microsoft, Land O’ Lakes, and Verizon) to close the digital divide and drive economic opportunity in local communities.
