Minority and non-traditional students are highly underrepresented in the STEM fields and they often require special recruitment strategies, “eye catching demonstrations” and hands on experience to peak their interests in these areas. Prairie View A&M University is uniquely positioned to make an impact on increasing the number of underrepresented minorities and women in STEM disciplines.  The institution has a very long history of producing students in STEM disciplines as evidenced by recognition from agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF). The University’s geographical position allows it to form meaningful STEM-based partnerships with rural schools (Hempstead ISD, Royal ISD, Waller ISD, Navasota ISD), and large urban/inner city and suburban schools (Houston ISD, Aldine ISD, Cypress Fairbanks ISD, Katy ISD, Fort Bend ISD), all within a 30 mile radius.  School administrators/teachers are encouraged to invite us to visit their schools to make presentations through interactive science activities. Requests for site visits can be made by contacting the project coordinator Dr. Hylton McWhinney
