PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (May 6, 2025) — Tamra Tolen, Ph.D., assistant professor in Prairie Views A&M University’s Department of Agriculture, Nutrition and Human Ecology, has been awarded nearly $5,000 in grant funding from Texas A&M AgriLife Research through the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Tamra N. Tolen, Ph.D.
Tolen’s project aims to establish a research internship program at Texas A&M University for Prairie View A&M undergraduates interested in animal and veterinary sciences. The program will provide students with hands-on research experience, personalized and group mentorship, and exposure to academic and industry networks. Through weekly meetings with faculty and professionals, students will explore a range of career paths and receive guidance to pursue graduate education or veterinary school.
Tolen will serve as co-principal investigator and program coordinator, leading the annual recruitment of six PVAMU students and helping to build a supportive learning community. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the pipeline of well-prepared PVAMU students entering graduate studies in animal and veterinary sciences at Texas A&M.
