Wesley Walsh is a Senior Chemical Engineering Major. She’s worked hard to balance her educational responsibilities with the demands of being a Black Fox with the Marching Storm. Wesley has been a competitive dancer from a very young age, and has many accomplishments under her belt such as performing with her competitive dance team on America’s Got Talent (they made it to the quarter finals), and being selected for the extremely popular Tiger Girls at Louisiana State University. Ironically enough, her mother is a PVAMU Chemical Engineering graduate who is successful in her own right, so even though she knew her curriculum would require a lot of time, she still wanted to dance with the Black Foxes. Not only has she been an integral part of the Foxes dance line, but she has served as the technical expert for the Foxes which required her to step in and take on the responsibility of ensuring the Foxes maintained their technical proficiency. Here is her story in her own words.

What made you want to be a Chemical Engineer?

I’ve always been a curious person. I always want to know why things are the way they are. I showed an aptitude for chemistry in high school so my mom introduced me to her Chemical Engineer friends from work. I was inspired by how different all of their job roles were. I did a little research on my own and ruled out Geo-Physics because it was less applicable on the job market. I’ve been a happy Chemical Engineering major ever since!

How long have you been dancing and what is the best thing about being a Black Fox?

I started dancing at about 3 or 4 and haven’t stopped since! I was a competitive dance from ages 5 – 19. My poor parents! The best things about being a Black Fox to me are 1) being able to learn and perform a new style of dance and 2) being a teammate! I love having a goal and working towards it with the other Real Ladies!

How has PV prepared you to transition from college to a working environment? How has your dance tenure prepared you for your chosen career?

PV has been so good to me. The alumni network is strong and I’ve already been able to connect with former Panthers at the company I’ll be working for upon graduation. I think this network will always remind me of my roots, be supportive, and encourage me to give back, myself. Dance has taught me dedication, perseverance, responsibility, and teamwork. When I’m down, it provides a healthy creative outlet. I’m forever grateful to all my coaches, directors and teachers for the lessons and well placed tough love.
