Texas Dance Educators’ Association (TDEA) is a yearly event bringing together elementary, middle and high school dance educators from across Texas to Houston for its annual conference. The conference also hosts the annual Texas All-State Dance Team. This was the 2nd year Black Foxes Director, Mrs. Shawn Zachery and the Black Foxes were invited to perform in the collegiate showcase, present a lecture and a movement workshop highlighting the HBCU dance style.

Mrs. Zachery presented a lecture on the history and evolution of the HBCU dance style. “I’ve found that many of our dance educators are faced with more diverse classes where many of the students are interested in the HBCU dance style that they see on social media and television. This gives dance educators an opportunity to learn more about the rich history of the style they are learning to teach their students.” The movement workshop features field show choreography along with stand routines, if time permits. Black Fox captain Shelbi Durand along with members of the Black Foxes led conference attendees in the choreography while explaining how the HBCU dance style can be utilized in secondary dance education classrooms. Shelbi stated, “We like showing everyone that we dance the same as other collegiate teams, but with our own style and swag.”

The Foxes also participated in the college fair where they were able to talk to high school students about the degree programs offered at Prairie View.
They also discussed dance opportunities at Prairie View. Mrs. Zachery stated, “It’s a great feeling to be the first HBCU invited to TDEA. The reception has been awesome and we hope to see more representation from Texas HBCUs in the future.”
