We are pleased to announce that the Independent Study Guidelines (Administrative Guideline 11.03.99.P0.G1) have been officially added to the university policy library, effective August 1, 2024. These guidelines outline the process for students to pursue self-directed educational experiences under faculty supervision, allowing for academic exploration beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Key Components of Independent Study:

  • Eligibility: Open to students in good academic standing, typically for courses at the 3000 level and above, with specific guidelines for other fields such as ARTS and DGMA.
  • Proposal Submission: Students are required to submit a written proposal, which must be approved by the instructor of record and the department before registration.
  • Instructor of Record: Faculty members guide and evaluate the student’s progress throughout the independent study project.
  • Credit and Grading: Independent Study courses are generally worth up to 3 semester credit hours (SCH), but may extend to a maximum of 6 SCH depending on the project’s scope.
  • Final Presentation and Evaluation: At the conclusion of the project, students will present their findings in a format agreed upon with the instructor of record, such as a written report or formal presentation.

Purpose of Independent Study:

  • Academic Enrichment: Enables students to delve into topics not typically covered in standard courses.
  • Research and Innovation: Supports student-driven research projects to enhance critical thinking skills.
  • Personalized Learning: Tailored learning opportunities encourage self-direction and independent exploration.
