Building on Resilience Lecture Series Sponsored by the MACH-III Center will feature Dr. Gilman Whiting, an Associate Professor, and director of graduate studies for African American and Diaspora Studies. He directs the Scholar Identity Institute and the Black male initiative at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Whiting has authored more than 60 scholarly articles, numerous book chapters as well a co-edited On manliness: Black Masculinity Revisited.

Dr. Whiting received his Ph.D. from Purdue Universityā€™s College of Education. Currently, he is an associate professor and director of graduate studies for African American and Diaspora Studies. Ā He directs the Scholar Identity Institute and the Black Male InitiativeĀ at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. His areas of research include educational disparity; special and gifted education; sociology of race, sports, and American culture; research methods, and fatherhood initiatives.Dr. Whiting has authored more than 60 scholarly articles in journals such as the Roeper Review, Journal for Secondary Gifted Education, and The International Journal of Sport and SocietyĀ as well a co-edited book On Manliness: Black Masculinity Revisited, and numerous book chapters.

The event will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018, from 6:00 pm ā€“ 9:00 pm in the Juvenile Justice Auditorium (Don K. Clark Building, Room 155).

This event is for everyone, students, faculty, community members and anyone interested in a conversation with a scholar and activist. During this session, he will touch on a range of topics from educational disparity to fatherhood initiatives to challenges in the Black community.
