History of the Chapel

Prairie View’s Chapel services were held in the gym for one hour and vesper would be every Tuesday evening. Students filled the place to learn and listen on how to live productive and spiritual lives. Today, students have a beautiful edifice to worship their Creator. The Johnson Phillip All Faiths Chapel was built and dedicated in February, 1986 under the leadership of the second dean of chapel, The Reverend W. Van Johnson. A building that seats over 300 was erected for the purpose of encouraging students, faculty and staff to become one with their Creator.

The history of the Johnson-Phillip All Faiths Chapel defines its purpose and vital existence on campus. It is located on the corner of L.W. Minor street and University Drive and proudly serves as the hub for the university’s academic programs and spiritual activities.“They Dreamed, They Believed, and They Achieved”
