Our Mission

The Healthy Houston Initiative will support parents and families through educational programs and psychological assessments. The Initiative will develop adult leaders who support school gardens, youth who explore careers in food and nutrition, and parents who have the resources they need to guide their offspring in positive decision-making concerning their future. Training will be offered that focus on parental engagement and general wellness as well as provide psychological assessments for children and youth. Financial planning workshops will be offered regarding health and life insurance.

The Healthy Houston Initiative supports individuals and families by working to provide self-care practices such as screenings, assessment and referrals for common conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Education is important for treating and preventing diseases.
Increasing evidence shows that mental health is a state of effective mental function performance, resulting in productive activities, rewarding relationships with others, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with life’s challenges. More and more, we recognize that both physical and mental health are essential to personal well-being, family and interpersonal relationships, and the ability to contribute to community or society. PVAMU will provide workshops and educational opportunities focused on parenting, and individual and family support aimed at increasing the wellness (both physical and mental) of residents in the community.
The Healthy Houston Initiative will promote the consumption of healthy foods through workshops and food demonstrations. The workshops will teach families how to prepare foods using fresh ingredients. Food demonstrations and recipes will educate clientele on how to shop on a budget using government or limited resources. Participants will be able to decrease consumption of processed foods.
