HOUSTON, TX – On February 2nd, 2023, Cooperative Extension Program Prairie View A&M University’s Wellness in Houston had its first National Wear Red Day Luncheon at the College of Nursing Auditorium, hosted by Program Coordinator Whitney Mack. To bring awareness for Heart Month and National Wear Red Day (February 3rd), we turned the College of Nursing red. Throughout the luncheon, each participant collected resources on heart-healthy foo

d, cooking demonstrations, and tips. Participants also planted red rose seeds to honor women who have experienced heart disease and stroke.

Our keystone speaker Dr. Jacklyn Sanders, professor for the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, shared her story and study on Congenital Heart Defects. We also had a speaker from the American Heart Association, Patricia Horace, speak on their educational Hands-Only CPR program, “Be the Beat.”

In addition, faculty and staff provided all participants with PVAMU swag, health screening resources, and a delicious heart-healthy lunch. For more information, contact wellnesshouston@pvamu.edu about any upcoming programs and partnership opportunities.
