September 9 – The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation has awarded its largest scholarship to an aspiring registered dietitian.

Jasmine Blackman, a dietetic intern in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences (CAHS), has earned a $10,000 scholarship from the foundation, the highest amount an applicant can receive.

“Growing up in a single-parent household can put a strain on a parent and being able to have my internship paid in its entirety is truly a blessing,” Blackman said. “The Foundation scholarship will provide me with an opportunity to focus solely on my studies while in the program, successfully complete the internship program and provide me with additional funds that will go towards my preparation for the registered dietitian examination.”

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation provides resources for dietetic professionals and students. The scholarship aims to support scholars in their academic endeavors and fund any potential research studies.

Blackman earned her bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition and Food and is currently working on her master’s in Business Administration, which she plans to complete in December. The internship has allowed her to meet other interns in her field, Blackman said, pushing her to work harder and find encouragement among her peers. She is set to complete her internship in May 2022.

Following the internship, Blackman plans to pass her registered dietitian exam and open a nutrition consulting business. Her future also includes earning a doctorate and becoming a professor.

Blackman said she is grateful for the world of resources that this scholarship will provide her, and she vows to urge other students to strive for these options.

“Be confident and vigilant about these opportunities,” Blackman said. “Look how we all can make such a positive impact in the world and the lives of those in need. It is my obligation and duty to encourage students of color about opportunities such as this.”

The scholarship application will reopen in February 2022. Undergraduate and graduate students in the nutrition and dietetic fields, dietetic interns, and dietetic technicians can apply.
