March 29 – February’s winter storm left many Houstonians without water, power, and access to food. Today, many Houstonians are still experiencing the storm’s aftermath and need food and water.

To address the need, Healthy Houston Initiative (HHI) recently volunteered at the Bounce Back Food Distribution Drive and Block Party Jam in Houston’s Independence Heights to address the need.

HHI and Expanded Food and Nutrition Program (EFNEP) staff and Family & County Health Program Leader Jacquelyn White, Ph.D., prepared for the food drive at the North Main Church of God in Christ. The group helped by arranging boxes, packaging food bags with donations from the Houston Food Bank, organizing school supplies for distribution, and handling other organization duties.

The event received support from several organizations in Houston and the Independence Heights Area. Neighboring churches in Independence Heights collaborated for the drive, providing free water, food, supplies, and even laundry services for residents.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner made a special appearance and helped with distribution. During the event, a Zydeco played while stilt walkers in colorful costumes entertained participants.

The HHI is a partnership with the Texas A&M University System, PVAMU, and Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Complete Communities Initiative. Within PVAMU, the Colleges of Agriculture and Human Sciences, Nursing, Juvenile Justice and Psychology, and Business work together to develop programming that uses a portfolio of educational, healthcare assessment, and outreach programs.
