Purpose

To ensure the health and safety of PVAMU students, faculty, and staff by promptly investigating and addressing any reported air quality or odor issues on campus.

Overview

PVAMU is committed to maintaining a healthy indoor environment. The Risk Management & Safety (RMS) department is responsible for investigating reports of strange odors and potential air quality issues. This program aligns with PVAMU’s policies and the Texas Indoor Air Quality Standard.

Reporting Odors and Air Quality Issues

When to Report: Report any unusual or persistent odors, or signs of air quality issues such as:

  • Unusual chemical smells
  • Moldy or musty odors
  • Burning smells without an obvious source
  • Symptoms of poor air quality such as headaches, dizziness, or respiratory irritation

How to Report:

  1. Immediate Notification:
    • Contact the Risk Management & Safety department immediately by emailing RMS@pvamu.edu or calling (936) 261-1747.
    • Provide detailed information, including the location, description of the odor, and any symptoms experienced.

Investigation Process

Initial Assessment:

  1. Response Team:
    • RMS team member will conduct a preliminary investigation to identify the source of the odor or air quality issue.
  1. Monitoring and Sampling:
    • Air quality monitoring and sampling may be conducted to measure levels of pollutants and identify contaminants.

Remediation:

  1. Source Elimination:
    • Once the source of the odor or air quality issue is identified, appropriate remediation steps will be taken.
    • This may include repairing HVAC systems, mold remediation, or improving ventilation.
  1. Communication:
    • Affected individuals will be informed of the findings and the steps being taken to address the issue.
    • Updates will be provided regularly until the issue is resolved.

Follow-Up:

          Documentation and Reporting:

    • All findings, actions taken, and follow-up results will be documented.
    • A report will be submitted to the RMS department and made available for review upon request.
