PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (March 5, 2020) – The Minority Achievement, Creativity and High Ability (MACH-III) Center at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) has been awarded a $90,000 grant to support two of its signature initiatives– the Building on Resilience Lecture Series and the Framing and Maintaining a Research Agenda Institute. This one-year grant was awarded by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s Center for Advancing Opportunity (CAO), an initiative supported by grants from the Charles Koch Foundation and Koch Industries.

The Building on Resilience Lecture Series highlights the research of authors shared in Dr. Fred A. Bonner II’s edited volume Building on Resilience, a text noted as being “a much needed and important resource on how to advance the success of Black males in education,” as well as scholars whose research is synergistic with the mission of the MACH-III Center. The Spring 2020 Building on Resilience Lecture held on February 13, 2020, featured Dr. John N. Singer, associate dean for diversity and inclusion and associate professor in the Division of Sport Management at Texas A&M University. Singer’s thought-provoking presentation was titled Black Male Excellence and Resilience in and through College Sport.

The Framing and Maintaining a Research Agenda Institute focuses on the steps necessary to frame and maintain an active research agenda, particularly in the Historically Black College/University (HBCU) context. From developing a researchable topic to revising and resubmitting a peer-reviewed publication, understanding the complexities of navigating the research terrain is key. Two institutes will be scheduled for this summer.

The principal investigator for the initiative is Bonner, who is a professor and endowed chair in PVAMU’s Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling in the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education. He is also founding executive director of the MACH-III Center. Bonner is an accomplished scholar in the field of education and research. His research examines gifted African American males, Millennials, and African Americans in STEM.

“We are grateful to Gerard Robinson and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s Center for Advancing Opportunity for supporting the MACH-III Center,” said Bonner. “Both the Building on Resilience Lecture Series and the Framing and Maintaining a Research Agenda Institutes provide us with a platform to disseminate best practices to support diverse populations across the P-20 spectrum and beyond into workplace contexts.”
