Dr. Julie Sorensen is a conductor as well as an orchestra and chamber musician. Julie currently serves as the Principal Conductor for the Fort Bend Symphony in Sugar Land, Texas. Previously, Julie served as the assistant conductor for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in Lubbock, Texas before taking the position of Artistic Director and Conductor of the Idaho State – Civic Symphony in Pocatello, Idaho. During that time, Dr. Sorensen was also the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Idaho State – Civic Symphony Youth Orchestra and was the conductor and organizer of the East Idaho Honors Orchestra. In 2020, Julie was awarded the Southeast Idaho Woman of the Year Award, for her outstanding service to the arts. Julie is known for her skill on the podium and her genuine and engaging personality both on and off the stage. Known for her diverse and engaging programming, she focuses on bringing both beloved standard repertoire as well as lesser known or under-represented works to the stage. Sorensen is a champion of new works and enjoys working alongside other musicians to capably bring these works to life. Armed with the belief that music has the unique ability to strengthen communities, Julie regularly is involved in community outreach beyond the podium in an effort to educate and engage the community in the importance of music and the arts. Sorensen enjoys guest conducting with engagements including the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra in Cheyenne, Wyoming and the Cache Valley Symphony in Logan, Utah. In January 2025, Dr. Sorensen served as the conductor and clinician for the 2025 Wyoming All-State Orchestra.
An avid educator, Dr. Sorensen served as the flute professor at Idaho State University and performed as a member of the City Creek Wind Quintet. As an active clinician for flute, orchestra and band, she works with students and groups in and around Texas, Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. As a professional flutist, she currently plays flute/piccolo for the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra. She has performed with traveling production orchestras for Cirque De la Symphony and Andrea Bocelli.
Julie is a member of the International Conductors Guild, where she serves as the board secretary and regularly serves as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts.
She received her PhD in Fine Arts with an emphasis in orchestral conducting from Texas Tech University, her M.M. in orchestral conducting from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and her B.A. in Music and flute performance from the University of Wyoming.
