The Texas Undergraduate Medical Academy’s Summer College Prep program offers academic workshops in math, English, study skills, research, time management, and professionalism, designed for High School Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors interested in pursuing a career in health science or medicine.
The UMA is pleased to announce that, in addition to participating in academic workshops, students will have the opportunity to apply for one of two Track specialties: the College Readiness Track and the Medical Skills Track. Space is limited for both tracks, and acceptance decisions will be made holistically based on the overall strength of the student’s application.
The College Readiness Track is a well-rounded academic experience that provides students the opportunity to meet UMA alumni, medical professionals, and scientific researchers in various specialties, gaining a deeper understanding of college life, academic preparation, and the diverse career opportunities in health science and medicine. Students will have the opportunity to visit a Houston-area medical school, PVAMU’s Agricultural Research Farm, and the Houston Health Museum’s Debakey Cell Lab to learn about a variety of health science and STEM career and research opportunities. Participants of the College Readiness Track will earn two certificates: College & Career Readiness and Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence Ethical Awareness.
The Medical Skills Track integrates experiential learning to provide students with the opportunity to earn their American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certificate, as well as their American College of Surgeons’ Stop the Bleed certificate. Participants of the Medical Skills Track will learn skills in blood pressure management, pathogen safety, suturing techniques, and other emergency preparedness skills. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to participate in several college and professional readiness sessions, tour a Houston-area medical school, and participate in a DIY Dissection Lab at the Houston Health Museum.
