The USDA has a great website that takes you through creating a farm-specific biosecurity plan for your premises here: https://www.healthyagriculture.org/prevent/biosecurity-plan/.

Any plan starts with a good Risk Assessment (link to: https://www.healthyagriculture.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/HFHA-biosecurity-assessment-1.pdf):

From there, the basic components include:

  1. Developing a Perimeter
  2. Sanitation for your Farm
  3. Managing Animal Health
  4. Recordkeeping
  5. Crisis Communication

There is also an Example Plan (link to https://www.healthyagriculture.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/HFHA-biosecurity-plan-example1.pdf) – it includes a lot of information, but don’t be overwhelmed! This is only an example, so you’re not starting from scratch – use the portions that apply to your operation. Here is a Template (link to https://www.healthyagriculture.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/HFHA-biosecurity-plan-blank1.pdf) for you to build upon.

There is also advice on what and how to talk about a problem with your surrounding community: https://www.healthyagriculture.org/respond/crisis-communication/
