The Apocalyptic Regeneration

In commemoration of Juneteenth, the TIPHC is exploring how freedom finally came to Texas, the reactions of the formerly enslaved that day in Galveston, and, how the word was spread throughout the state to 250,000 enslaved Black Texans. The Apocalyptic Regeneration examines what the edict meant for African Americans who moved forward, for the first time, unshackled – emotionally and physically – and free to decide their own fates.

The Black Family – Identity, Endurance, Perception

For this online exhibit, the TIPHC is building on the 2021 National Black History Month theme, The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity. The black family has been a topic of study in many disciplines—from literature and the visual arts, to anthropology and social policy. This exhibition examines depictions of “the Black family” from slavery through contemporary times.
