Summer Bridge Programs

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) offers several Summer Bridge Programs for incoming freshmen students. These programs were implemented to support a comprehensive college experience and support network that enhances students’ personal responsibility and intellectual, civic, and social engagement.

The goals of the PVAMU Summer Bridge Programs are guided by the University’s student success priorities. They are as follows:

  • Develop key academic understanding and skills among students
  • Provide engaging opportunities to develop participant skills that will aid in the successful transition to college
  • Promote a cohort experience among participants to strengthen new peer relationships
  • Familiarize participants with PVAMU and its resources

As a result of participating in one of the PVAMU Summer Bridge Programs, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate efficacy toward academic work
  • Develop a sense of belonging to PVAMU
  • Gain necessary college success skills

The PVAMU Summer Bridge Programs are completely free or have a minimal cost to our student participants! All programs have their own admission and acceptance requirements. Students can only participate in one program. Students must be Texas residents (or a Non-Resident on a Presidential or Regents Scholarship) to participate.

Minimum Summer Bridge Program Qualifications Include:

  • Acceptance into Prairie View A&M University for the Fall of the current year
  • Must be a Texas resident (or a Non-Resident on a Presidential or Regents Scholarship)
  • High school grade point average of 2.80 or higher
  • *For The following programs, a High School GPA of 3.0 or higher is required and students must be College Ready in Math, Reading, and Writing (via ACT, SAT, or TSI Exams): Architecture, Biology, Engineering, and Nursing

Multi-Major Summer Programs 

The Panther Pride Summer Bridge Program is a five (5) week program designed for incoming PVAMU freshmen who are interested in jump-starting their academic careers and to aid with the transition between high school and college. Participants will receive 6 hours of college-level coursework. Students must be Texas residents (or a Non-Resident on a Presidential or Regents Scholarship) to participate.

The Humanities Summer Bridge Program is a 5-week academic program designed for incoming freshmen majoring in Agriculture, African American Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, History, Music, Political Science, Communications, and English. The Humanities bridge program provides incoming freshmen the chance to complete two college courses before the start of the fall semester.  Upon completion, students will have 6 hours of college-level coursework. Students must be Texas residents (or a Non-Resident on a Presidential or Regents Scholarship) to participate.

The MathUp & WriteUP Summer Bridge Program is a summer program for entering freshmen for Fall 2024 who have not yet satisfied the requirements for the TSI exam. Students will receive personalized writing and mathematics instructions from highly trained professionals to jump-start their preparation for Freshman Composition and College Algebra.

Requirements:

  • Must attend PVAMU as a Freshman for Fall 2024
  • Have not satisfied the TSI reading, writing, and mathematic requirements

Students have the option to attend any of the 3 summer session dates:

The Whitlowe R. Green Teacher Education Summer Bridge Program is a 5-week academic residential program designed for incoming students majoring in Teacher Education. Participants will have the opportunity to complete five hours (two courses) of college-level curriculum and instruction courses, participate in academic and professional enhancement workshops and engage in projects with teacher education faculty and other teacher education students. Students must be Texas residents (or a Non-Resident on a Presidential or Regents Scholarship) to participate.

The School of Public and Allied Health Summer Bridge Program is a 5-week academic, residential program designed for incoming students majoring in Public and Allied Health. Prairie View A&M University became the first Historically Black College and University in Texas to offer the program where students will receive comprehensive education through courses on health promotion, disease prevention, epidemiology, athletic/exercise performance, nutrition and more. Participants will have the opportunity to complete six hours (two courses) of college-level curriculum and instruction courses, take part in academic and professional enhancement workshops, and engage in projects with Public and Allied Health faculty.
