Mission: The mission of the First-Year Experience (FYE) program at Prairie View A&M University is to ensure every new Panther is equipped with the support and guidance needed to successfully transition into university life and build a strong foundation for their academic journey.
The First- and Second-Year Experience (FYE & SYE) is a collaborative initiative that engages faculty, staff, student leaders, and campus partners in a coordinated network of support. Through peer mentoring, early outreach, and close coordination with university resources, we ensure each new Panther receives the guidance and connection needed to succeed from their first year through graduation

First-Year Experience Developmental Model
The First-Year Experience (FYE) program at PVAMU is grounded in building strong peer-to-peer relationships through PAWS (Panthers Advocating for Wellness and Success), our signature peer mentoring initiative. Under this model, every first-year student is paired with a trained student mentor who provides guidance, encouragement, and resources to support a successful transition into university life.
This approach focuses on:
-
Connection and Belonging – Creating meaningful relationships that help students feel integrated into the Panther community.
-
Personalized Support – Offering matched mentoring to navigate academics, wellness, and campus engagement.
-
Early Intervention – Addressing challenges early by connecting students to the PV Cares Team and other resources.
-
Leadership Growth – Developing both mentors and mentees as confident and engaged leaders.
-
Retention and Success – Supporting each Panther’s journey from enrollment through their first year, laying the foundation for continued success in their second year and beyond.
