
Mr. Brewer was an executive leader for over 40 years. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing from Prairie View A&M University in 1972. He received a Master of Science Degree from Texas Woman’s University, Houston, Texas in 1985. His exemplary performance as a nurse has earned him many awards and promotions during his career. He worked for M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for over 40 years and Mr. Brewer began his career as a staff nurse in head and neck clinical nursing.
Mr. Brewer has many first in achievements and accomplishments including: the first African American male nurse to graduate from Prairie View A&M University nursing program in 1972, first African American male nurse to hold a management position at MD Anderson, including but not limited to head nurse, supervisor. He is the first African American to be promoted to ascend the leadership ranks of nurse manager, supervisor, Assistant Director of Nursing, and Director of Nursing in patient management as well as Director of Ambulatory care: clinical administrator, director of the ambulatory treatment center and emergency center, and he was an Executive Director for outpatient services and emergency services in Oncology. Furthermore he is one of the first African American nurses to be promoted to executive leadership in the ambulatory centers (chemo therapy, and intensive care) at MD Anderson. He also served as the Director of Intuitional Diversity for community partnerships developing over 40 affiliations and K-12 programs. Mr. Brewer is also known for his innovative work in design-ing nursing units and creating nursing caring physical environments.
Mr. Brewer developed patents and many other innovations, most familiar is the US patented “3C Tracheostomy tray, Nasal Suctioning Kit, and Atomizer sprayer, as well as other innovations. Mr. Brewer is a speaker and a teacher, known for his passion for history and also serves as the historian, preserving artifacts for Prairie View A&M University and MD Anderson. This too is a first for a male graduate from Prairie View A&M University Nursing Program. Mr. Brewer’s success and leadership as a professional nurse and inventor has enhanced the image of the College of Nursing as well as the nursing profession as a whole. All of his transformations and in-novations shows his dedication to nursing as an alumnist of Prairie View A&M College of Nursing.
