SXSW is an annual conference and festival held in Austin, Texas that brings together a wide range of industries including music, film, technology, and education. SXSW EDU is the sector of the conference that focuses on fostering innovative programming and forward-thinking ideas within the education industry. The Office for Marketing and Communications’ goal was to showcase a few of our top academic programs & student life to educators, K-12 and Higher Education administrators, education industry professionals, k-12 students.

Objective & Target Audience

To create a unique and engaging experience for attendees that would increase brand awareness, turn foot traffic into webpage clicks and university/academic program inquiries.

All ages within the education industry; ages 17-25 for academic programs

Campaign Strategy

The Office for Marketing and Communications created a pop-up installation featuring the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education, Roy G. Perry College of Engineering, College of Business, School of Architecture and a series of videos to showcase the academic and student life that attendees could view on-screen and tune-in via the silent headphones we provided. The activation was housed in a 20×0 exhibit space within a 40,000 square foot expo space. We also provided over 4 varied promotional items to match the areas of academic focus,(ex. Mechanical pen for Engineers, hard hats keychains for School of Architecture, etc.)

Summary

PVAMU at SXSW EDU was a success. The event attracted over 500,000 attendees from around the world, and the event generated significant media coverage, social media buzz with attendees sharing their experiences on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok, LinkedIn, YouTube, and garnered future partnerships for the academic programs featured and several testimonials from alums and supporters. Social media resulted in 69% increase in engagements, over 300 + YouTube visits, 350+ new followers across all platforms. The Office for Marketing and Communications were able to replicate the energy and excitement of PVAMU with this in-person event and, many attendees reported feeling a sense of community and connection with Prairie View A&M University afterwards and deemed it an innovative and forward thinking university.
