About The Women’s Center

The Women’s Center at PVAMU is a cognitive space that engages specialized programming, education, advocacy, resources, research, and services to support and empower women as well as men to unite as equal partners and become leaders on campus and beyond.

Mission Statement

The Center seeks to provide all students with a safe space and respectful forum in which open and honest discourse about women’s issues, gender, race, and sexual politics can be discussed and debated; reduce violence against women on campus; promote mentally and physically healthy lifestyles among women; honor the past and present achievements of women; and promote ongoing women’s professional and personal growth.

Our Goals

  • Establish a supportive environment for women to gather and share women-centered resources and information.
  • Create ongoing mentorship programs for female and male students.
  • Launch formal PVAMU Leadership Academy for young women.
  • House Relationship & Sexual Violence Prevention Program (RSVP).
  • Provide advocacy for victims/survivors of sexual assault and relationship/domestic violence.
  • Promote women’s health issues and create healthy woman programming, and volunteerism.
  • Establish Gender Studies courses to promote discussion of gender roles in society and provide opportunities for both women and men to increase their knowledge of how gender operates in our society.
  • Groups, Leadership ,and Training- Support groups provide cognitive space that honors the female voice and allows for analysis of the multivalent issues pervading the female consciousness and being. While facilitated by the Director and interns, the group is peer driven, thus empowering each individual to partner in addressing the issues pertinent to the women at PVAMU and indeed the world.
  • Collaboration and Support –Partner through  volunteerism in the Women’s Center and offer support  to other programs on women issues.
  • Grants and Evidence-Based Research-Develop grants and conduct research on the efficacy of the results of women programs.
  • Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) – Educates the campus community on the dynamics of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking through programming, training, and/or activities throughout the year.
  • Community Education-Educate the university and surrounding community on relationship violence , prevention, and intervention.
  • Men’s Project—a grant funded project designed to educate men on treating women and themselves with respect.
  • Peer Advocates– A non-paid opportunity that will help students develop practical, work-related skills while providing essential services to students in need and reducing relationship and sexual violence on the campus of PVAMU. Each participant must complete the required 28 hours of interactive hands-on training in Relationship and Sexual Violence.
  • Sister to Sister Group – Tuesdays, 5:30pm-7:00p.m. Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Monday at the Movies – a monthly event highlighting women in film and the arts followed by discussion.
  • Wednesday’s Woman –  a monthly event featuring Leaders at PVAMU.
  • First Friday Lunch/Sister Talk – a monthly open forum to discuss current gender issues and events in the news.
  • Reading is FUNdamental – a quarterly book club featuring books by women of color.
  • PVAMU Relationship Boot Camp – a quarterly forum that kicks relationships into shape by focusing on healthy vs. unhealthy relationships.
  • Show Off! – A quarterly forum to highlight students art (Poetry, drawings, spoken word, etc.).
  • Mentorship Program – A mentoring program that consist of faculty/staff to female students in need.
  • WOE! Newsletter—Monthly newsletter highlighting the Center, events, activities, calendar, resources, articles, op-ed, think pieces

Hours of Operation

    • 8:00am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday
    • Tuesdays – 8:00am – 7:00pm.
