TITLE: INCREASING COLORECTAL SCREENING RATES WITHIN A HOME-BASED PRIMARY CARE SETTING: A QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

ABSTRACT: This DNP project aims to assess the alignment of a recently implemented bariatric support group program with the standards set by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) and to gauge patient satisfaction with the support group program using an amended Short Assessment Patient Satisfaction Likert Survey in a select organization The project also evaluated the impact of group support on weight loss at two weeks and six months interval. Accreditation standards were assessed using the Bariatric Support Group Evaluation tool. The survey was administered via Qualtrics to bariatric surgery patients from January 2023 to December 2023 to gather feedback on the relevance and usefulness of support sessions and overall program satisfaction. Lastly, an Independent T-test was conducted to analyze weight data collected at two weeks and six months postoperative in the pre- and post-group to assess if support group engagement had an effect on weight loss. The results revealed that the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center Bariatric Support Group Program met accreditation criteria as set forth by the MBSAQIP. Additionally, the data revealed that patients expressed overall satisfaction (50%) with the support group program. Specifically, satisfaction (50%) with the educational material was identified, and patients were pleased that meetings were virtual. Lastly, weight loss outcomes revealed a significant difference in weight between the PRE and POST groups during the two-week postoperative period. At the six-month period the PRE and POST groups were not significantly different. In conclusion, the accreditation standards were met, patient engagement within support groups demonstrated satisfaction with the information disseminated, and weight loss outcomes were submarginal and did not offer any significant insight into whether support group engagement was the exact cause of weight loss. Recommendations include a longevity support group study to understand the impact on weight loss outcomes. Additionally, conduct a study assessing enhancing support group engagement among postoperative bariatric patients.
