TITLE: SMALL MOVES, BIG IMPACT: EMPOWERING ICU NURSES WITH PASSIVE MOBILITY TRAINING
ABSTRACT: Introduction: Intensive care unit–acquired weakness is a prevalent and preventable complication among critically ill patients, resulting in long-term disability, delayed recovery, and increased healthcare costs. Despite strong evidence supporting passive range of motion (PROM) as an essential intervention to prevent ICU-acquired weakness, its consistent implementation remains limited due to gaps in nursing education, safety concerns, and the absence of standardized protocols. Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project is to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured PROM education program for ICU nurses in improving adherence to mobility protocols and enhancing nurse knowledge. Methods: Guided by the Knowledge-to-Action (KTA) framework, this project employs a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design over a three-month period. The project will take place in the 24-bed intensive care unit of a large public teaching hospital in Harris County, Texas, serving a diverse, high-acuity adult population. The intervention includes formal education sessions, hands-on training, and distribution of standardized PROM checklists. Data will be collected through pre- and post-intervention surveys assessing nurse knowledge, as well as through chart audits evaluating adherence to PROM protocols. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics to summarize demographic and adherence data, paired t-tests to assess changes in knowledge scores, and chi-square tests to compare adherence rates before and after intervention. Conclusion: This project aims to bridge the gap between evidence and practice by integrating PROM education into routine ICU care, thereby enhancing patient outcomes and promoting sustainable, evidence-based nursing practices.
