TITLE: A DARKER LENS: EXPLORING GRAPHIC MEDIA EXPOSURE, DESENSITIZATION, EMPATHY AND AFFECT

ABSTRACT: This study explores the impact of exposure to graphic media exposure on empathy and affect, with a focus on the moderating role of desensitization. Exposure to violent media has raised concerns about its effects on emotional responses and social behaviors, especially among youth and other vulnerable populations. This research investigates whether frequent interaction with violent content leads to reduced empathy and diminished affect, potentially disrupting emotional regulation. Utilizing an experimental design, the study assesses empathy and affect levels in participants with varying media consumption patterns, examining the extent to which desensitization mediates these relationships. Findings aim to inform discussions on media influence and emotional health, offering insights for mental health professionals and policymakers.
