I am pleased to announce Dr. Anthony Harris as the interim dean of the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education, effective August 15, 2023. Harris brings to the position administrative and academic experience commensurate with this appointment.

As Professor and Head of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling (ELAC), he has developed productive and sustainable partnerships with Local Educational Agencies (LEA), increased enrollment in the ELAC programs at the master’s level, developed and implemented curricular updates and policy changes to facilitate program admission and degree programs completions; and facilitated the re-establishment of a culture of mutual respect and collaboration among faculty, staff, and students in the department.

Dr. Harris has a wealth of knowledge and experience as a faculty member and administrator in the higher education arena to include Associate Professor, Department of Counseling and Guidance, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce, TX (1985-1993); Assistant to the President, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce, TX (1993-1997); Associate Vice President for Marketing and Resource Development, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce, TX (1997-1999); Executive Assistant to the President, The University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS (1999-2002); Associate Professor, Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX (2003-2008); Professor, Educational Leadership, Mercer University, Atlanta, GA (2008-2015); Professor and Chair, Department of Educational Leadership, Sam Houston State University (2015 ā€“ 2019). He is the author or editor of fourteen books, and his scholarly publications and presentations are numerous and cover a wide range of topics, including marital and family success, women in leadership, multicultural education, bullying, enrollment management, and school-community relations.

As Interim Dean, Dr. Harris will be charged with continuing to engage the faculty, staff, and students in programs and initiatives designed to raise the academic profile of the College and promote an environment focused on continuous quality improvement and student success. His administrative responsibilities will include the planning, advancement, and assessment of programs and services; oversight of fiscal resources and personnel productivity; enrollment growth; research productivity; faculty and staff recruitment, placement, and support; image building; fundraising; and interpretation of rules and procedures.

Dr. Harris will serve as interim dean of the Whitlowe R. Greene College of Education for a maximum of one year. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Harris into his new role.
