Welcome to Prairie View A&M University’s Department of Social Work Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Our team is excited to offer students, PVAMU alums, and community members professional development opportunities, innovative workshops, and courses that comply with your CE requirements. We partnered with a well know training company to provide social workers with a portfolio of tools to help them master the concepts required to pass the MSW exam.

Dr. De Carvalho is an accomplished organizational development professional with a solid academic background in management and over 20 years of experience in policy analysis, evaluation, strategic planning, comprehensive grant writing, and statistical project evaluation. He has an MSW and two Ph.D.s in program development, policy analysis, and management. Born in Brazil, Dr. De Carvalho lived in many countries before coming to the United States over thirty years ago. He is fluent in five languages and has the multicultural sensitivity and capacity to engage organizations to improve the quality of their services, reduce programmatic costs, and maintain efficient operations.

Dr. Spears received her BSW from Texas Woman’s University and her MSW and Ph.D. from the University of Houston. She also obtained a certificate in Nonprofit Leadership through the Leadership Institute for Nonprofit Executives from the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University. Dr. Spears has been in the field of Social Work for over thirty years, serving in several social work roles, i.e., a case manager, medical social worker, aging planner, program developer and grant writer, trainer, and consultant. Before joining the Social Work Dept., she served as a State 4-H Leader with the Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View & M University. In 2017, Dr. Spears joined the Department of Social Work, teaching and advising social work students.

 

Dr. Darron Garner, PhD, MSW, LCSW S

Associate Professor, MSW Program

 

Dr. Garner has spent the last 15 years cultivating his skills through teaching, counseling, research, and community activism. He has had the privilege of teaching at Prairie View A&M University, the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work, Boston University, and the University of Houston Clear-Lake. As a clinical social worker, he provided mental health services to youth and their families at juvenile justice facilities and nonprofit agencies. He owns and operates a private practice specializing in first-time juvenile offenders. Dr. Garner holds a B.S. in Psychology from Northwestern State University, an MSW from Louisiana State University, and a Ph.D. in Juvenile Justice from Prairie View A&M University.

Materials and Tools: The registration fee includes the cost of the materials and tools. We will not prorate the course fee if you purchase the materials /tools from an external source.

MSW Exam: The registration fee does not include the MSW exam cost.
