Dr. Kareem Jordan

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Kareem Jordan has been named Dean of the College of Juvenile Justice (COJJ) effective June 1, 2024, pending Texas A&M University System Board approval.

An experienced leader in higher education, Dr. Jordan currently serves as Director of Diversity & Inclusion in the School of Public Affairs at American University in Washington, DC. Before this role, he served as Graduate Director in the Department of Justice, Law, and Criminology, where he directed multiple programs, including the Ph.D. program and two masterā€™s programs (i.e., criminology and terrorism/homeland security policy).

With over 20 years of teaching experience, Dr. Jordan has taught across the spectrum of criminal/juvenile justice courses, including corrections, theory, methods, systems, and policy. He also served as Graduate Director at other institutions: University of Massachusetts Lowell, University of Central Florida, and the University of North Florida. Through these leadership positions, Dr. Jordan has honed his knowledge, skills, and experience in key areas, including faculty/staff/student recruitment and retention, student-centered pedagogical practices, academic assessment, curricula revisions, strategic planning, faculty and student mentorship, collaboration, and team building.

Dr. Jordanā€™s research focuses on juvenile justice and race/justice issues within the criminal justice system. He has published dozens of articles in the fieldā€™s top journals, including Race & Justice, Journal of Crime and Justice, Crime & Delinquency, and Criminal Justice & Behavior. He has published multiple scholarly books and served as editor for the premier journal for race/ethnicity in the criminological field, Race and Justice: An International Journal, for four years. He also serves on the editorial boards for leading journals: The Prison Journal, Journal of Crime and Justice, and Criminal Justice Policy Review.

Dr. Jordan has experience partnering with juvenile justice and criminal justice agencies in multiple states, such as Florida, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Maryland. He also worked with multiple federal agencies. When partnering with agencies, Dr. Jordan seeks to utilize research to help agency leaders determine if they are meeting their stated goals.

As a first-generation college student from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Jordan earned his bachelorā€™s, masterā€™s, and Ph.D. in criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Kareem Jordan to Prairie View A&M University. I would also like to thank Dr. Camille Gibson, Interim Dean, for her dedicated work in leading the College of Juvenile Justice over the past five years. Dr. Gibson has been an integral part of COJJā€™s continued growth and success, and she will be a great asset in assisting Dr. Jordanā€™s transition into his new role. He will visit the campus periodically during the spring semester to listen, learn, and work with stakeholders while developing strategic priorities.

We look forward to all the COJJ will achieve under Dr. Jordanā€™s leadership.
