There are 2 ways to use Turnitin, and the links below address both from the faculty perspective.

The Turnitin External Tool, also called LTI 1.3, is used when adding a Turnitin link for submissions that are not going to be directly* connected to the Canvas gradebook. The link is added to the Module as an external tool. Similarity reports, grading, feedback, and other functions are provided within a Turnitin-like environment.

The Turnitin Plagiarism Framework is used when creating an assignment in Canvas for submissions that will be directly connected to the Canvas gradebook. It’s added using the standard Canvas assignment tool set to the “Online” Submission Type with Text Entry or File Uploads. A similarity report is generated and the assignment can be used with Canvas’s group and peer reviewing functions.

Are you working on a research project and need to run similarity checks on your work?

Use our PV-All-User-TurnItIn-Submissions course in Canvas. This course is for PVAMU Students, Faculty, and Staff to submit work to TurnItIn for similarity checking. Please contact the PVAMU Center for Instructional Innovation and Technology Services at ciits@pvamu.edu to obtain the link to this course.

* – You can indirectly connect a LTI 1.3 assignment to the gradebook by starting with a standard Canvas assignment and then selecting the External Tool assignment type within the assignment settings. But do not get this method confused with the Plagiarism Framework.
