Temporary Changes to Grading Policy for Spring 2020
Message from The Office of the President and The Office of Academic Affairs

Given the extraordinary conditions we are facing for the spring 2020 semester, the University has elected to allow a Pass/Not Pass (P/NP) grading option for all undergraduate courses. Doing so does not reflect a reduction in expectations but an acknowledgment of the severe complications of this unusual moment.

Undergraduate students have the option of designating as many of their spring 2020 semester courses as P/NP as they choose. Grades of C or better are considered to be passing and grades of D or F are considered not passing. Courses taken for P/NP grades during spring 2020 will count towards curricular, major, academic progress, and graduation requirements.

Students have until noon on Tuesday, April 28th to make changes to their grading options. Changes are not permitted once the final exam period begins. If no selection is made, the normal A, B, C, D and F grades will be assigned.

Additional guidance on how to opt-in to P/NP will be provided within the next week.

Faculty will evaluate and report grades as normal at the end of the semester to the Office of the Registrar following the standard submission process. If a student has selected the P/NP option, the Registrar’s Office will make the change.

Please Note: Any student considering the change from graded to P/NP grading should consult with an academic advisor, professional advisor, athletics advisor, or financial aid advisor to understand the implications of the change on one’s future plans including progress toward a degree or financial aid.
