For many African American forest landowners, land represents many things, assets, resources, and wealth. However, despite the economic potential land ownership represents, forestland owners can face significant land retention challenges if it is not managed carefully. Heirs property is the leading cause of involuntary land loss among African Americans in the United States.

Missed opportunities from underdeveloped forest land or being in a vulnerable ownership position can be detrimental. These issues can lead to significant land retention concerns and missed financial opportunities. Limited engagement with forest management planning
and not addressing heirs’ property ownership leaves African American Forest landowners at a disadvantage.

The Sustainable African American Forest Land Retention (SFLR) program can help. The program offers proper forest management planning to help landowners avoid issues surrounding heir property laws.

Please contact one of the Community Based Organizations located in various counties or Prairie View A&M University at (936) 261-5117 to participate in the SFLR Program and learn more about addressing heir’s property and receiving forest management assistance. More importantly, enroll in the program to receive free assistance:

  • Forestry management plans
  • Heirs Property Education
  • Legal Assistance (Wills, Estate Planning, Consultation)
